Cava is gaining increasing recognition on Polish tables. Known for its elegance and timelessness, this sparkling wine delights with its taste and aroma. How does Cava differ from other wines of this type? How should the drink be served to highlight its qualities? What types are available on store shelves?

Cava – what is it? History of Cava.
There are several basic types of sparkling wine – Cava certainly closes the top three most popular. The production of the beverage dates back to the 19th century, when Josep Raventós discovered the technique of secondary fermentation inside the bottle. By adding yeast and sugar to it and then aging it for about 9 months, bubbles appear in the Catalan wine. Italian Prosecco and French Champagne are prepared in a similar way; both, along with Catalan Cava, share a sparkling structure, but differ in everything else.
The extraordinary taste of Cava wine quickly made it a favorite among gourmets worldwide. To this day, it is appreciated by connoisseurs. Although characterized by a low price, Cava is a high-quality beverage with a complex bouquet of aromas – each of its types is worth trying.
Cava Wine – types
Cava wine is mainly prepared from three grape varieties: Macabeo, Xarello, and Parellada. Sometimes Chardonnay or Pinot Noir varieties are also used. The resulting beverages are divided into 3 types:
- Cava Brut
Cava Brut is the most popular type of Cava wine. It is dry, yet delicate, with strong fruity notes. It is suitable for elegant receptions and informal gatherings.
- Cava Semi-Seco
Cava Semi-Seco is a sweet alcohol with a mild taste and aroma. It is recommended as an accompaniment to desserts: cakes, ice cream, and creams.
- Cava Rosé
Cava Rosé is a sparkling wine with a beautiful pink color. It is produced by blending basic white grapes with red ones. Cava Rosé can be an addition to a main course or a charming element of a romantic date.
Spanish Cava tastes best when served chilled – at a temperature of 5-8 degrees Celsius. Before serving, the wine should be stored in the refrigerator for at least several hours.
Cava Wine – how to serve?
Cava – like any other wine – tastes best when served in glass vessels. There are three approaches to this:
- High-quality Cava wine should be served in flute glasses. This keeps the bubbles in the drink longer and maintains their intensity.
- Cava can also be served in white wine glasses – this way the intensity of the bubbles will diminish faster, but the aroma will still accumulate in the bowl and delight with a full bouquet.
- During informal gatherings, the drink can be served in wine glasses – just as Catalans do during everyday meals.
Organizing a garden party can make you feel like you're at a Spanish fiesta. Just serve tapas, seafood, or a cheese board, pour Cava wine into glasses, and play Catalan music – Southern European joy of life will appear in an instant.
