An elegant glass carafe is an essential item on any party table. Ideal for pouring water, sweet drinks, or alcoholic beverages, it must, however, be kept perfectly clean. Due to nooks, crevices, or a narrow neck, it's difficult to clean the vessel in a dishwasher. How to wash a carafe by hand? How, and with what means, can you restore the shine of the carafe's glass "brother" - the decanter?

Carafe and decanter – what's the difference?
A carafe and a decanter are indispensable accessories used for serving drinks during parties and receptions. Both vessels, though similar, differ in their use.
A carafe usually has a slender shape, but this is not set in stone. It can resemble, for example: a pitcher, a bottle, or a flower chalice. It can be delicate and simple, or heavy and geometric. It is perfect for serving various drinks. We often encounter carafes for whisky (with simple geometric forms), liqueurs and cordials (more decorative, with interesting forms), or vodkas (tall, with a smaller diameter). They usually also have a stopper. Besides its utilitarian role, a carafe is also an inspiring decoration.
A decanter, with its wide base and narrow, open neck, is used to aerate wine. This allows aromas to integrate and tannins to soften. It enables a more profound tasting experience and the development of more interesting aromas. Its specific structure means it primarily serves a practical role, and its design often takes a back seat, often being dictated by the vessel's intended use.
How to quickly clean a carafe inside?
Vessels such as decanters and carafes are not suitable for dishwasher cleaning – primarily because the dishwasher's mechanism does not allow for thorough cleaning of such shaped vessels. They also need to be cleaned immediately to avoid stubborn stains – both from dyes in beverages and from fingerprints.
How to clean a carafe inside? You can use a bottle brush to reach all nooks and crannies. If the neck is somewhat wider, you can insert a sponge into the vessel and manipulate it with a metal sushi stick or a steel straw.
It's important to know not only how to wash a carafe, but also what to use. This primarily includes gentle dish soap, warm – but not hot – water, and ordinary, simple sponges without an abrasive layer. Glass should not be scrubbed during hand washing to avoid scratching it. Instead of dish soap, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water or baking soda.
How to clean a crystal carafe?
Special attention should be paid to how to clean a crystal carafe. It requires gentle washing in lukewarm water with a very mild detergent. Avoid excessively hot water, which could damage the crystal. After washing, it should be immediately wiped with a soft, dry cloth to prevent streaks.
How to easily clean a decanter or wine carafe?
Cleaning a decanter can be challenging due to its shape and difficult access to the interior. As with a carafe, it's best to wash it immediately after use to prevent wine residue or other liquids from settling.
Its delicate shape and thin neck necessitate hand washing. The easiest way is to fill the decanter with warm water and dish soap, mix the contents until foam forms, and wait a few minutes. Nooks and crannies can be scrubbed with a bottle brush. If you're unsure how to clean a carafe or decanter from wine residue, an interesting method is to pour in dry rice grains and add vinegar or dish soap, then vigorously swirl the mixture – the rice will mechanically clean the grime. After both the first and second methods, the glass needs to be thoroughly rinsed, and then placed upside down to allow any remaining water to drain freely.
Regular cleaning of decanters and carafes is important to keep glass vessels in perfect condition. These are not only aesthetic treatments that prevent the accumulation of sediment, but also prevent them from affecting the taste of beverages served in the glass.
