Cytrynówka - recipe

Before experimenting with additions, for the first time, it's best to check how the basic cytrynówka tastes – the recipe is simple to make at home. Its basic ingredients are:

  • lemons: fresh and preferably organic, to avoid artificial preservatives.
  • spirit or vodka: alcohol usually 40-70% strong.
  • sugar: white or brown, depending on taste preferences.
  • water: filtered, preferably boiled.

This drink – from the first day of maceration to the day of consumption – needs up to 4 months to achieve its full flavor and aroma.

To prepare good cytrynówka, you will need

  • 5-6 large lemons
  • 1 liter of 95% spirit or vodka – depending on the desired strength
  • 500 g sugar
  • 500 ml water
  • optional additions as desired

Place the alcohol in a large, clean jar, leaving room for the fruit. Wash the lemons thoroughly under running water, then dry them. Grate the lemon peel, avoiding the white pith. Place the grated peel in the jar with alcohol. Set aside for 2-3 weeks in a dark, cool place. After this time, prepare sugar syrup – boil 500 ml of water in a saucepan and dissolve 500 g of sugar in it. After cooling, pour into the jar with the lemon peel and spirit, mix thoroughly. Set the container aside for another 2-3 weeks, stirring occasionally. After just under a month, pour the contents of the jar through a sieve or cheesecloth, separating the solids from the liquid. Pour the finished cytrynówka into a carafe and store in a dark place – it is ready for consumption after another month.
