Walnut Liqueur - Recipes

The best walnut liqueur - recipes that can be easily made at home are within reach. Freshly cracked, shelled and peeled walnuts, preferably from old, multi-year trees, are the basis of every recipe. This very basic recipe can be modified by changing primarily the type of alcohol used, e.g., to whisky, cognac, or rum, and also by adding spices such as cinnamon, crushed allspice, or vanilla seeds during the further maceration process.

Classic Walnut Liqueur

To prepare classic walnut liqueur, you will need:

  • 300 g walnuts
  • 500 ml rectified spirit (70%)
  • 250 g sugar
  • 250 ml water

Place the cleaned, chopped walnuts in a glass jar with an airtight seal. Pour alcohol over them. Place in a dark place for about 2-4 weeks, shaking the jar regularly every day.

After the maceration process, prepare sugar syrup by boiling water and thoroughly dissolving sugar in it. Let it cool. Strain the liquid from the jar with walnuts – preferably through a sieve or cheesecloth. Mix it with the sugar syrup and stir thoroughly.

Age the liqueur for a minimum of 4 weeks. Store it in a dark place, in a clean glass container, e.g., a decanter. The more time passes before tasting, the better.

Walnut Liqueur with Honey

To prepare walnut liqueur with honey, you will need:

  • 200 g walnuts
  • 700 ml honey
  • 500 ml vodka
  • peel of one lemon

Place the cleaned, chopped walnuts along with the lemon peel in a glass jar with an airtight seal. Pour alcohol over them. Place in a dark place for about 2 weeks, shaking the jar regularly every day.

After the maceration process, heat water with honey, dissolving it. The maximum water temperature should not exceed 60 degrees Celsius. Strain the liquid from the jar with walnuts – preferably through a sieve or cheesecloth. Mix it with the honey.

Age the liqueur for a minimum of 4 weeks. Store it in a dark place, in a clean glass container, e.g., a crystal decanter. The more time passes before tasting, the better.

Walnut Liqueur with Licorice Root

To prepare walnut liqueur with licorice root, you will need:

  • 150 g walnuts
  • 700 ml rectified spirit (70%)
  • 150 g sugar
  • 500 ml water
  • 1 licorice root

Place the cleaned, chopped walnuts along with the chopped licorice root in a glass jar with an airtight seal. Pour alcohol over them. Place in a dark place for about 2-3 weeks, shaking the jar regularly every day.

After the maceration process, prepare sugar syrup by boiling water and thoroughly dissolving sugar in it. Let it cool. Strain the liquid from the jar with walnuts – preferably through a sieve or cheesecloth. Mix it with the sugar syrup and stir thoroughly.
