Children rarely willingly reach for raw vegetables and fruits. Fortunately, there are many ways to sneak them into healthy meals and snacks. Fruit pancakes, vegetable-based cakes, and, most importantly, delicious, colorful fruit and fruit-and-vegetable smoothies can be considered wholesome dietary elements. Why should you drink smoothies? Is it appropriate to serve them at a party? How can you ensure the drink maintains its appearance for a long time?
The Power of Fruits and Vegetables
Eating fruits and vegetables – alongside physical activity – is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. They are so diverse that it would seem everyone could find something for themselves. Children, however, know better, and many refuse to eat them... as a matter of principle. A great idea to serve your little one their daily portion of vitamins is with fruit smoothies!
Blended fruits and vegetables have a velvety texture. They are usually sweet and aromatic. Additionally, they boast beautiful colors. They almost always turn out well, so it's worth encouraging your child to choose the ingredients for their smoothie themselves. A glass of the drink also accounts for one of the five recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
Such a mix will also be an excellent snack for adults! And when guests drop by around second breakfast or afternoon tea, a fruit smoothie with yogurt – especially in summer and early autumn, made from garden harvests – will delight everyone, regardless of age.
Smoothies are also often a component of weight-loss diets. The best weight-loss fruit smoothies are full of fiber: they satiate and curb cravings for sweets. Additionally, thanks to their high vitamin content, they improve the overall appearance of skin, hair, and nails.
What should you make fruit and vegetable smoothies from? Is only what's local and seasonal the healthiest? What else can go into them?
Exotic Seasonality
Seasonal fruits are, of course, the healthiest. At their peak ripeness, they contain the most vitamins and minerals. They are sweeter, tastier, and... cheaper. It is primarily by their falling price that you can tell it's time for their mass harvest.
In today's global world, this slogan, however, has a slightly different meaning than it did a dozen years ago. Poles are not limited to just forest fruits in summer and pears or apples in autumn. Seasonality also applies to bananas, pineapples, watermelons, oranges, and other exotic plants. Some of them, like citrus fruits, are tastiest when winter prevails in Poland. Others, such as melons, ripen in late spring and summer.
Delicious smoothies can also be made from frozen produce. Properly frozen fruits at the peak of the season will not lose their nutritional value for many months! A great idea, therefore, is to prepare your own smoothie mixes in spring and summer. For example, you can slice bananas, put them with a handful of berries and strawberries into a freezer bag, and store them at temperatures below 18oC. In winter, simply toss the contents of the bag into a blender and blend once slightly thawed – or not – enjoying the taste of summer long after the season.
Colorful and Fragrant
Fruit smoothies for children and adults are so colorful that it would be a shame to serve them in an ordinary mug. In a tall glass made of perfectly clear glass, the drink will always look stunning. A vessel with thicker walls, lower, slightly wider, and heavier will be a good choice for children – it is less likely to slip from small hands or be accidentally knocked over.
During gatherings with family or friends, even fruit smoothies can be elegantly served. Beer glasses and goblets, or even red wine glasses, will work wonderfully here! The drink, frothed in a blender, will have a larger volume than standard juice, thus requiring a larger vessel. A stem, which can be held, will help maintain the temperature of the chilled smoothie. Crystalline glass, in turn, will make the drink's color wonderfully shimmer in the summer sun.
The rims of the glass or goblet can be decorated with fruit slices – just like cocktails! You can also put a colorful skewer of unused ingredients into the smoothie, or, for the vegetable version, a stalk of celery, stiffer herbs like rosemary, or olives threaded onto a longer toothpick.
Not Just Fruit
The base of smoothies is fruits and vegetables – sometimes, however, they are not juicy enough to achieve a velvety liquid. To thin the consistency, it's a great idea, not just for children, to add milk to the smoothie – cow's or plant-based, yogurt, kefir, or buttermilk. This will make the whole thing less sweet, and, incidentally, in the case of dairy, a portion of calcium will appear in the smoothie. The drink can also be thinned with water – including sparkling water. Especially with those made from citrus, it will make them pleasantly refreshing.
A fruit smoothie with yogurt isn't all! A great idea to increase the nutritional value of the drink is to add a large teaspoon of peanut butter. Those who prefer a drier taste can also try a smoothie with the addition of coconut, almond, or sesame paste.
Adults will surely enjoy a smoothie with added espresso. Both children and parents will also be tempted by a smoothie flavored with cocoa. For those on a diet, a good solution would be to add cinnamon, cardamom, or even cayenne pepper to a fruit and vegetable smoothie. Herbs will also work here: mint, basil, parsley, and others that can be thrown in with the fruits or vegetables and blended together.
Finally, to add even more nutritional value to a fruit smoothie, you can add flaxseeds or chia seeds. In the case of vegetable drinks, adding a teaspoon of olive oil, flaxseed oil, or hemp oil will improve the absorption of minerals and vitamins.
Recipes for Young and Old
To prepare a smoothie, a blender is essential – preferably a jug blender. The appliance must work until every particle of the plant is crushed into a smooth mass. In the case of hard vegetables, such as carrots, it is better to pass them through a juicer or press, and then add the resulting juice to the target smoothie.
It is important to thoroughly wash the ingredients and remove the skin. The skin of tomatoes may not be fully pulverized, and that of citrus or apples will make the drink bitter. On the other hand, if vegetables and fruits cut too slowly or the blade "doesn't catch" them, a little water, oil, or dairy should be poured into the blender jug – depending on the recipe. Especially in smoothies with milk, only a little is needed – it's better not to pour it all in at once before thoroughly blending the other ingredients, as it will froth too much.
When using fruits and vegetables that darken quickly – such as avocado – it's worth adding the juice of half a lemon to the smoothie. This will help the smoothie retain its color long after serving.
