Recipes and ideas for the most delicious layered salads

Layered salads - ideas and inspirations - KROSNO blog

Although mainly associated with the holiday table, layered salads are an elegant idea for an appetizer or a celebratory dinner regardless of the season! They are colorful, pleasing to the eye, and often contain more diverse vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients in one serving than regular salads. It's worth having a few recipes up your sleeve, not only for the popular mayonnaise-based ones, but also for light and vegetarian options, and those with unusual, surprising layer arrangements!

A bowl full of vitamins

The most interesting layered salads stand out with contrasting colors of diverse ingredients. This effect can be achieved primarily with fresh, cooked, and canned vegetables, which are abundant in such dishes. Thanks to a well-thought-out composition, guests are delighted, and a glass salad bowl filled to the brim becomes a decoration for the holiday table!

Such a dish has the advantage of spoiling more slowly. For example, a layered tuna salad, especially when combined with fresh vegetables, will not become completely soaked with water – it will simply drain to the bottom of the salad bowl, thanks to the arrangement of raw ingredients at the bottom. Its aroma and taste – if stored properly – will remain unchanged for up to three days, which also helps prevent waste.

Another advantage of this solution is the ability to adapt the food to the needs of vegetarians. A layered chicken salad or ham salad can be composed so that the meat is at the very top or bottom. This makes it easy to avoid undesirable ingredients when serving portions.

Dishes for layered salads

Serving layered salads requires having transparent glass dishes in your kitchen. Only then does all the work on the effective arrangement of individual ingredients make sense. The ideal solution will, of course, be glass salad bowls and bowls of various capacities and shapes. The most interesting will be rounded ones, in which you can clearly see the individual, colorful ingredients and a pleasing symmetry. However, even more angular ones – especially when using fresh lettuce – will look extremely elegant.

A great idea for serving layered salads is also a glass fruit stand! At first glance, it resembles a round or semi-round bowl on a stem. This serving method is particularly impressive if there is an additional green decoration at the very top!

Layered salads can also be served in bulbous glasses or goblets. Their preparation requires a little more work, as each small vessel must be individually and evenly layered with all ingredients. This serving method – along with a long, silver latte spoon – will be particularly suitable as an appetizer during elegant buffet receptions, accompanied by, for example, finger foods.

A salad bowl for layered salads is not everything. The second important element is a long, preferably silver, spoon for scooping out the contents. It should be flattened, with gently rounded edges and an extended handle. This will allow you to easily reach the very bottom to freely scoop all the ingredients used.

Any occasion is a good occasion

A layered salad with egg, ham, or fish is primarily associated with Easter or Christmas. The abundance of recipes and the variety of ingredients used mean that this type of dish will also work well during other celebrations and gatherings with loved ones. Many of them can serve as an appetizer during birthdays or success celebrations. Others are a perfect idea for a light, everyday dinner for the whole family!

Layered forest grove - salad - recipe

To prepare the LAYERED FOREST GROVE, you will need:

  • Marinated mushrooms – large jar
  • Chicken breast – 150 g
  • Boiled "in their jackets" and peeled potatoes – 3 large pieces
  • Boiled "in their jackets" and peeled carrots – 2 medium pieces
  • Hard-boiled and peeled eggs – 4 pieces
  • Green peas – 1 can
  • Corn – 1 can
  • Pickled cucumbers – 3 large pieces
  • Fresh parsley – 1 large bunch
  • Mayonnaise – 3 tablespoons
  • Greek yogurt – 4 tablespoons
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Plastic wrap

The salad should be prepared at least 6-8 hours before serving. To prepare the Forest Grove, you will need a symmetrical, round bowl and a rimless serving platter with a larger diameter or, alternatively, a large, round plate. Each sauce layer of this impressive salad must be firmly pressed down with a spoon before adding subsequent ingredients, so that the whole thing does not fall apart when transferred.

Fry, bake, or steam the chicken with salt and pepper. Once cooled, cut into small cubes. Dice the eggs, potatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. Drain the mushrooms from their brine. Finely chop the parsley. Rinse the peas and corn in a colander. Mix mayonnaise with yogurt.

Line the bowl with plastic wrap so that its ends extend beyond the rim, allowing for later covering. The sides must be tightly covered. Line the bottom with mushrooms, caps down – each mushroom must adhere to another. Fill the spaces between them with green parsley. On top, place the carrots, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and spread with a portion of the mayonnaise sauce, pressing down firmly. The next layers are, in order: egg, cucumber, and chicken. Pour another portion of the sauce over them, again pressing down with a spoon while spreading. The next layers are, in order: corn and peas, and sauce. Finally, arrange the potatoes, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, and thinly spread the rest of the sauce, again pressing down firmly and thoroughly with a spoon. Cover with the excess plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6-8 hours.

After this time, uncover the top layer of foil. Place a glass platter or plate "upside down" on the salad bowl. Quickly and smoothly flip the entire thing, placing the new dish on the countertop. Gently remove the bowl, then remove the foil so as not to disturb the top layer. The platter or plate around the salad can be sprinkled with chopped parsley, chives, or green sprouts for decoration before serving. It can be served by gently slicing and serving with a cake server.

Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.
