In ancient times, ice cream was considered a luxury item, reserved exclusively for the wealthiest city dwellers. Today, however, on the hottest days of summer, everyone can enjoy its refreshing taste. How do you serve delicate, creamy ice cream to bring true delight to both household members and guests during your summer parties?
Serving ice cream desserts – what was it like in the past?
Before cones and wafers truly made their way to Poland, ice cream desserts were mainly served in glass dishes, sometimes replaced by waxed paper. The first pleasantly crunchy, sweet wafer in the shape of a cone was created only in 1896, on the initiative of an Italian, Italo Marchiony. To this day, it remains one of the most popular ways of serving ice cream – both Italian-style and in scoops, or as delicious ice cream desserts with fruit and whipped cream.
Some also credit Syrian vendor E.A. Hamwi as the father of the crispy cone. In 1904, he rolled wafers for a colleague whose neighboring stall ran out of plates for customers.
An equally interesting story is connected with the accidental (!) creation of ice cream on a stick. It was in the winter of 1905, in San Francisco. A distracted 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson, excited about playing with his friends, left a glass with sweet orangeade and a stirring stick on an outside windowsill. Little Frank joined his playing friends and only noticed the next day that the glass with the frozen orangeade was still on the windowsill. The moment he pulled the stirring stick, he created the first ice cream on a stick.

In a martini glass, you can successfully serve ice cream, decorated with a layer of homemade whipped cream, but it's also an interesting way to serve guests an ice cream dessert with raspberries or jelly.
Ice Cream Dessert with Jelly and Fruit
- Choose two jellies of different flavors, e.g., raspberry and gooseberry.
- Dissolve the first jelly according to the package instructions, then pour into a glass (to about 1/3 of its height) and refrigerate until set.
- Once the jelly has set, place sliced bananas, raisins, and chocolate shavings on top. Pour the second layer of jelly over everything and refrigerate again.
- When both layers have set, dip the rims of the martini glasses in lemon juice and sugar.
- Add a scoop of ice cream and decorate with melted chocolate sauce. You can also use dried cranberries, chopped walnuts, fresh strawberries, or a sweet wafer for decoration.
Martini glasses are a great way to elegantly serve even the simplest ice cream desserts – especially when you don't have special sundae glasses on hand. Similar to the examples mentioned earlier – serve ice cream in a martini glass with a long cocktail spoon.
