Types of Alcohol Glasses - What You Should Know?

You can never have too much of a good thing – this saying perfectly captures the abundance of designs, colours and uses of glasses offered by KROSNO. Everyone is sure to find something for themselves – for home, for a business, for a restaurant or as a gift. All glasses for alcoholic and other beverages, in addition to their elegant design, have a specific construction that supports tasting. What is worth knowing about individual types of glassware before buying?

Types of glasses - which glasses for which drink?

There are many different types of glasses. Which glasses are for which purpose and why are they shaped the way they are? The secret lies in the way individual beverages are tasted. Their capacity, the shape of the stem or bowl, patterns or their absence are all designed to support the senses in perceiving taste, aroma, appreciating colour, and even tactile sensations related to the consistency of the liquid.

Different types of glasses, such as wine glasses or whisky tumblers and many others, are designed not only to maximise the beverage's features, but also for proper grip. Thin stems protect the liquid from warming up, while bases that are held with a full hand transfer heat from the hand to the liquid, allowing additional aromas to be released.

Types of glasses – names

There are more universal glasses in which you can drink various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as specific types of glasses designed for particular types of drinks – the names can be specific, referring to the type and method of tasting, or even a particular situation. The basic forms are:

  1. Wine glasses, whose basic features are thin and long stems, on which the bowl is placed. They are divided into:
    1. red wine glasses - usually larger and wider, to allow the wine to breathe better,
    2. white wine glasses - smaller and narrower, to maintain a low temperature,
    3. flute champagne glasses - have a tall and narrow structure to allow free flow and retention of bubbles,
    4. flat champagne glasses - with wide bowls, were forgotten for a long time, but are now regaining popularity.
  2. Glasses for spirits, whose characteristics cannot be summarised in one definition, all depend on the type of drink:
    1. whisky glasses and tumblers – there are several types of glassware, from heavy-bottomed glasses to tumblers, their construction depends on the method and context of tasting,
    2. brandy and cognac glasses – have wide bowls that are held in the hand, allowing for better swirling and warming of the drink,
    3. liqueur glasses – usually smaller and more ornate, as liqueurs are consumed in smaller quantities and often served after a meal as a digestive,
    4. cocktail glasses (Margarita, Martini, Cosmopolitan, Gin&Tonic and others) - usually have specific shapes that highlight and complement the taste and presentation of the drink. Capacities are related to the amount of liquid and additions that are intended for the glass; they were often designed to promote a specific type of alcohol on the global market and have become ingrained in popular consciousness,
    5. vodka glasses, which are small and simple, are mainly used for toasting.
  3. Beer glasses, usually holding 300 to 500 ml of liquid and allowing the aromas to be captured, with a stable base. In particular, we distinguish among them:
    1. dark beer glasses, so-called Snifters - with a wide bowl,
    2. light beer glasses - with narrower, tall bowls,
    3. beer tasting glasses, so-called Teku glasses - with a slightly smaller capacity, often on high stems, with a specially designed bowl that extracts and accentuates delicate aromatic and flavour notes.
  4. Water glasses - with large, capacious bowls that easily accommodate a significant amount of ice. They are also perfect for serving lemonade, drinks, or flavoured water.

What else do you need to know about types of alcoholic beverage glasses?

Types of alcoholic beverage glasses

In addition to their specific purpose, which allows for matching the glass to the drink and occasion, universal features that all types of alcoholic beverage glasses should have are of great importance. These are the golden standards of design, the fulfilment of which guarantees high quality and durability. The most important of these are:

  • material quality - glasses made of high-quality glass, especially Crystalline, are aesthetic and durable, less prone to chipping and damage.
  • elegance and design – the aesthetic finish of the glassware makes them an integral decoration of the table and adds charm to serving beverages; they can be matched to the style and occasion; products made by hand evoke particular admiration.
  • ergonomics – glasses, in addition to design, should primarily be designed with the user in mind, i.e., have a comfortable shape, appropriately profiled rim, etc., to improve the consumption experience or facilitate holding.
  • glass thickness - the right thickness is a synergy of elegance and functionality; too thin glasses can be easily damaged, while too thick ones can diminish the pleasure of drinking.
  • transparency – clear glass vessels allow you to enjoy the colour of the drink, which is an important element of tasting.
  • scratch and stain resistance - glasses that are scratch-resistant and easy to clean will maintain their shine and aesthetic appeal for a long time.

It is also worth paying attention to multifunctionality – although vessels are often designed for a specific drink, it is worth having some that are perfectly suited for serving wine, water, or even… desserts.
