How is glass decorated? The most popular glass decorating techniques

Glass has been a material accompanying humanity since the dawn of civilization. Over centuries, many diverse decorating techniques have emerged – some have become obsolete, but some are still being perfected. There are also methods that were invented relatively recently thanks to scientific advancements. All of them allow for achieving unique, durable effects – in line with the designer's vision or an individual client's order. What do these individual glass decorating techniques involve, and what are their characteristics?

Project Realization

KROSNO offers its business clients the possibility of custom glass decoration. This allows food sector companies or restaurants to purchase sets of dishes with their own logo or other decoration, influencing the atmosphere of the establishment. It's also an excellent idea for a marketing campaign element, for use at trade fairs or as an elegant prize in a competition, for example. There are also many small workshops on the market that offer glass decoration to private individuals – a set with a custom design is a wonderful gift idea or occasional tableware for use at a wedding or other important celebration, later becoming a beautiful souvenir. What glass decorating techniques can be used? What are their advantages?

Silk Screen Printing on Glass

Sitodruk na szkle - techniki zdobienia szkła - blog KROSNOSilk screen printing is a very popular method for applying prints and decorations to almost any material. No wonder – it guarantees rich, accurately reproduced colors and precise detail. This way, logos, trademarks, QR codes, and virtually any other image can be made on glass. It is excellent for decorating large series. This technique has evolved over thousands of years – today it delivers fast, perfect, and most importantly, durable results.

Painting is done on automatic or semi-automatic machines that reproduce the design on glass. The design is first entered into a computer, and then a stencil prepared from the graphic is applied to a fine silk screen mesh, through which paints are pressed. These can be monochromatic, including matte or relief (almost colorless, only providing a textural effect), or multi-colored, including, for example, with a luminescence effect or thermochromatic (changing color with temperature).

Sandblasting Glass

Piaskowanie szkła - techniki zdobienia szkła - blog KROSNOSandblasting glass is also historically one of the oldest methods used for decoration. It helps achieve an interesting, matte effect on the entire surface or just a part of it.

As the name suggests, a stream of sharp sand is released onto the glass under pressure. It abrades the layers according to a pre-prepared stencil. This can be just one layer or a design distinguished by several depths of abrasion, allowing for unique raised elements and shading.

Contrary to appearances, this process allows for very precise reproduction of the design and repeatability of the pattern in a series. Such decoration is, of course, durable. The design is monochromatic – the matte fragment is uniform and stands out against the shiny glass, although a multi-layered design allows for "pulling out" different shades of gray: from black to white.

Glass Applications

Aplikacje na szkle - techniki zdobienia szkła - blog KROSNOGlass applications are various types of colorful raised elements applied to the finished vessel. Their creation requires extraordinary precision and glassmaking craftsmanship. Each product of this type is original, and the design itself is durable. An object, such as a gold coin or another souvenir, can also be embedded in the glass. The process of making glass with an application takes a little longer, but even with the same design, similar, yet still unique effects are obtained.

The glassblower creates colorless and colored applications by gathering a portion of molten glass for the product, shaping it, and cooling it according to the standard procedure. Then, using glassblower's scissors, he attaches subsequent portions of glass – colorless or in the desired color – cutting off any excess. The whole piece is reheated again and blown into the glass mold through a blowpipe, and then, after taking shape, it goes to the annealing oven.

In the method known as "color on a bubble," the vessel is characterized by a single, gradually changing color. The glassblower, using a heated blowpipe, gathers a portion of colored molten glass, shapes it, and blows it into a bubble shape. After cooling, it is covered with a colorless mass and shaped. The whole piece is blown into the mold, and then into the annealing oven.

Another type of application is called frit, powder, or crisps. In this case, the glass bubble is rolled in the desired material, then shaped in the mold and – like the others – goes to the annealing oven. Each product of this type is unique – it is impossible to achieve two identical pieces. Therefore, it is an ideal gift idea for a special person.

Glass Grinding

Techniki zdobienia szkła - szlifowanie - blog KROSNOGlass grinding is another traditional method that allows for achieving truly artistic effects or creating a vessel that aligns with current trends. This technique includes: engraving, manual matte grinding, matte and spray matte grinding, manual polished and polished on a bubble grinding, as well as surface grinding or laser decoration. Grinding is durable and, regardless of how it is used, will remain unchanged for many years. Manual execution of such decoration takes quite a long time, yielding an original effect. Machine grinding, on the other hand, can be repeated, regardless of the length of the series. It is worth exploring some of these glass decorating techniques in detail.

Automatic engraving, also known as SAGRYT, is a process involving the creation of a decoration on the surface of a product using an automatically controlled diamond-coated cutter. It can work on up to 10 items simultaneously! All that is needed for its execution is a pre-prepared, monochromatic graphic file. Such a decoration is resistant to mechanical abrasion, and the image is 100% reproduced and repeatable in large series. Even the most complex designs can be created in this way.

Another automatic grinding technique is "poeting." Computer-controlled diamond-coated discs perform decoration on the surface of up to eight products at once. This is an efficient way to produce large series of engraved vessels. Similarly, laser printing also involves decoration by a pre-programmed device.

The most difficult to execute is manual grinding, which involves incising the glass surface using stone or diamond-coated wheels. A grinding machine called a "kuglarka" assists in this process. This allows for engraving with various incision depths. It requires not only craftsmanship but also a great artistic sense. Vessels with such grinding are very impressive – for centuries, such decorated glass has been an object of desire for many people. One cannot imagine a more beautiful gift than a hand-engraved set of glasses or goblets.

Decal on Glass

Techniki zdobienia szkła - kalka - blog KROSNODecal on glass, also known as transfer printing, is an application on starch paper that is affixed to the surface of the product. It is prepared beforehand on special automatic machines. First, it is peeled from the paper, and then it is affixed to the product. This is manual work, requiring extraordinary precision.

The advantages of this technique include the ability to use an unlimited number of colors, similar to direct screen printing. However, unlike screen printing, the shape of the product does not matter. Despite being hand-decorated, decal printing also stands out for its high precision.

Spray Painting Glass

Techniki zdobienia szkła - malowanie natryskowe - blog KROSNOSpray painting glass is similar to other industries. The decoration is applied with a spray gun in the form of a paint stream atomized by compressed air. This method can be used for both single- and multi-color decorations, including shaded, matte, and glossy effects.

The advantages of spray painting include high resistance of the decoration to dishwashing, an unlimited color palette, and the ability to decorate any product in this manner. The design achieved on glasses can be replicated on carafes, bowls, and pitchers. The result is color-coordinated tableware that can create a beautiful dining set, fitting perfectly into home or restaurant decor.

Hand Painting Glass

Techniki zdobienia szkła - malowanie ręczne - blog KROSNOHand painting glass can be done in two ways – with a brush or with lusters. In the former case, decorative preparations are applied to the surface in liquid form. This method, of course, does not allow for creating identical series of vessels. However, in combination with grinding, it can achieve a stunning effect, which is particularly important for vessels that are also meant to be a cherished souvenir. The advantages of hand painting are the ability to apply paint to products of any shape, decorate the entire surface or specific selected fragments, and the lack of need for prior stencil preparation. In the latter case, the project can be entrusted to an artist.

Lusters, also known as mirrors, are liquid paints applied with a brush-wheel (though they can also be sprayed) to cylindrical vessels and then fired. This allows for a glossy or transparent effect. Hand-applied lusters can also contain precious metals such as gold, platinum, or copper, which give an opaque effect. Due to the paint's consistency, details or straight lines cannot be painted in this way, but the final effect is very impressive. This method allows for hand-colored vessels with high repeatability.

Effects on Glass Surface

Techniki zdobienia szkła - efekty na powierzchni szkła - blog KROSNOAmong the unique glassmaking decorations that make glass cease to be clear during the forming stage, taking on a unique appearance, are: foamed glass, crackle, sparkling point, metallization, satin finish, and optical decoration. It is worth looking at least at two of them.

In the crackle effect, or cracked glass structure, the glassmaker gathers a portion of molten glass onto the glass bubble, forms it, and then blows it out. The pre-formed piece is then dipped in cold water to freeze the top layer. The mass is then reheated and blown into the mold, and later into the annealing oven.

Foamed glass looks as if dewdrops have settled on it. After forming the glass bubble, a small and very brief dusting of sodium bicarbonate is applied. Then, the bubble is again picked up and blown into the mold. This is another decorating technique that allows for creating unique vessels.
